Graham Dent, from the RNLI, in conversation with John Newton
One of our original purpose-built Eastbourne lifeboats. This craft is similar to “The Samaritan”, our first lifeboat, built in 1822. Both were rowed by ten local volunteer fishermen who went out in all weathers, day and night, to rescue those in peril from the sea.
2022 marks the tenth anniversary of our current All-Weather Lifeboat, the “Diamond Jubilee”. She arrived in Eastbourne in May 2012 and is a Tamar-class, twin engine, self-righting vessel with steel-lined keels and computerised navigation equipment.
